Location description: Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) site 178 Leg 18, in the northeastern corner of the Gulf of Alaska. 777.5 m of sediment were drilled consisting of gray mud and ice-rafted erratics above 270 m, and interbedded muds, diatomaceous sediments, and thin, poorly sorted silt and sand turbidites below 270 m (see also Kulm and others, 1973). Preliminary investigation in Holocene to mid-Miocene turbidites and pelagic sediment revealed as many as 37 discrete ash layers. Location coordinates provided in the Deep Sea Drilling Project Reports and Publications (http://www.deepseadrilling.org/i_reports.htm) as degrees/minutes/seconds and converted to decimal degrees; datum not specified, assumed to be NAD27.
