Clear weather conditions last week prompted a number of keen-eyed observers to share photos of fumarolic plumes at the Katmai group volcanoes. This is a photograph of Griggs volcano taken through a spotting scope from King Salmon, Alaska, about 60 miles northwest of the volcano. Circle highlights a vigorous, long-lived, high-temperature fumarole on the southwest flank of the volcano. It has been said that on calm days, the roar of this fumarolic jet can be heard from the valley floor.
