Alaska Volcano Observatory

Two photographs of the falls on Crater Creek, the outflow stream from Okmok caldera. The right photo was taken on August 2nd, three weeks after the onset of the 2008 eruption. The left photo is approximately the same view taken in September, 2004. Okmok is treeless, and at lower elevations is covered with a verdant blanket of wildflowers and grasses. Okmok is also active, and several eruptions within the past 100 years have produced intra-caldera ash and lava flows several kilometers long. However, the location, thickness and extent of this ash-fall blanket are unprecedented within the past 100 years. The index image is from a DEM.
