| Text Description: | Northern lobe of the White River Ash. The ash layers lie not more than 1 m beneath the surface of the soil and are often seen as thin bands in quarries, road cutes, and river banks. To obtain a sample, a trench was cut at the bottom of the layer, the thickness was recorded, and a representative portion (about 1 kg) was collected. If the deposit was thick and apparently unreworked, several samples were taken in stratigraphic sequence (from Downes 1985 p. 929). |
