Update on AVO Operations during COVID-19
The Alaska Volcano Observatory continues to monitor Alaska volcanoes and issue forecasts and regular updates of volcanic activity. Our priority is to continue to accomplish our mission while also maintaining the health and safety of our employees and community, which are our highest priorities. We continue to follow guidance from the White House, the CDC, and State and local authorities as we implement teleworking, social distancing and virtual meeting tools. The Alaska Volcano Observatory is a cooperative program of the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, and the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys. Guidance from these parent agencies varies slightly, but in general we have shifted our operations to a mostly virtual mode and have minimal staffing within our offices.
At this time, travel and field work to maintain our physical monitoring networks on Alaska volcanoes has been postponed until June, and we will be reconsidering our field work schedule as the COVID-19 situation evolves. When it does occur, all work will follow State and Federal government guidelines to ensure public safety and the safety of our staff.
