AVO Scientists present at U.S. Department of Education Teacher-to-Teacher Workshop

Scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory will present at the U.S. Department of Education Teacher-to-Teacher Workshop in Anchorage, AK on August 9 & 10, 2007, at Anchorage's Bartlett High School. This free professional development opportunity is the last of nineteen, nation-wide, summer, regional workshops for teachers as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative. Part of No Child Left Behind, the Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative supports teachers' efforts in the classroom through professional development workshops, eLearning, and by sharing relevant information through email updates.

The unique Anchorage workshop includes two, place-based, science sessions lead by AVO staff, "ESI Alaska: Volcano Eruption Scene Investigations" and "Bridging the Gap: Elementary Teachers and Young Scientists". Participating teachers will be able to earn professional development credit at Alaska Pacific University through the Alaska Staff Development Network.

Workshop participants are also invited to visit the Anchorage offices of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) at the USGS Alaska Science Center on Saturday, August 11. Tour participants will see first hand the real-time monitoring of Alaska's dynamic volcanoes.

At present there are over 350 registered participants from across the country for the Anchorage Teacher-to-Teacher Workshop.
