Alaska Volcano Observatory

The slow eruption of lava in the summit crater of Great Sitkin Volcano continues. Minor seismic activity was observed over the past day with occasional small earthquakes detected. No unusual activity was observed in cloudy satellite and webcam views. 

The current lava flow began erupting in July 2021. No explosive events have occurred since a single event in May 2021.

Local seismic and infrasound sensors and web cameras are used to monitor Great Sitkin along with regional infrasound and lightning networks and satellite data.

Unrest at Shishaldin Volcano continues. Elevated seismicity continues with periods of volcanic tremor and earthquake activity observed over the past day. Weak infrasound signals associated with gas bubbles bursting deep within the volcanic crater were also detected. Minor steaming was observed in some clear satellite and webcam views, but no ash clouds or deposits were detected. 

The last significant ash-producing eruption occurred in November 2023. 

Local seismic and infrasound sensors, web cameras, and a geodetic network are used to monitor Shishaldin Volcano. In addition to the local monitoring network, AVO uses nearby geophysical networks, regional infrasound and lighting data, and satellite images to detect eruptions.
