ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY INFORMATION STATEMENT

A severe interruption to a regional telecommunication link in Adak following several recent large storms has resulted in the loss of data flow from monitoring stations at five volcanoes in the Adak area. As a result, AVO can no longer seismically monitor these volcanoes and we are unable to assess seismic unrest, or to quickly confirm or dismiss reports of activity at these volcanoes.
For Tanaga, Takawangha, and Gareloi, which were previously at GREEN/NORMAL, we are changing the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level to UNASSIGNED/UNASSIGNED.
Great Sitkin and Kanaga remain at ORANGE/WATCH and YELLOW/ADVISORY, respectively.
As at other volcanoes without real-time local monitoring, AVO will continue to use satellite and lightning data, regional infrasound, and reports from pilots and ground observers to detect signs of eruptive activity at these volcanoes.
There is no estimate of when the telecommunication link will be repaired. AVO will issue additional information once data from the seismic networks are available.
Aviation color code and alert level remain at ORANGE/WATCH, but no local monitoring data currently available.
Aviation color code and alert level remain at YELLOW/ADVISORY, but no local monitoring data currently available.
Aviation color code and alert level changed to UNASSIGNED/UNASSIGNED due to unavailability of local monitoring data.
