ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Thursday, October 30, 2008, 11:04 AM AKDT (Thursday, October 30, 2008, 19:04 UTC)
KASATOCHI VOLCANO
(VNUM #311130)
52°10'9" N 175°30'41" W,
Summit Elevation 1030 ft (314 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Seismicity at Kasatochi as determined from the network on Great Sitkin Island remains low. Satellite views of the volcano today showed a weak thermal anomaly and a minor steam plume.
There are no seismic stations on Kasatochi Island and AVO uses seismic networks on neighboring islands to monitor earthquake activity at the volcano. For this reason, low-level seismicity may not be detected and renewed volcanic activity could occur with little or no warning.
OKMOK VOLCANO
(VNUM #311290)
53°23'49" N 168°9'58" W,
Summit Elevation 3520 ft (1073 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Seismic activity at Okmok Volcano remains at low to near-background levels. Satellite views of the volcano are mostly cloudy.
Although the level of seismicity is relatively low, it is possible, but growing increasingly unlikely, that vigorous ash emissions will resume.
