Taryn Lopez sampling gases in the fumarole field on the SE flank of Trident Volcano. The caustic solution inside the bottle (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) contains a small amount of cadmium, which reacts with the sulfur in the gases to form cadmium sulfide, giving the solution its yellow color after the sample has been collected.

In the background of this photo, a portable multi-GAS instrument is visible, making continuous measurements of the composition of the gas plume, to be compared later with the analytical results of the direct samples.
