Map showing the names and locations of historically active volcanoes in Alaska, current as of November 18, 2009. The 52 volcanoes on this map meet at least one of the following criteria since 1700: a) documented, unquestioned eruption, b) strongly suspected eruption, c) persistent fumaroles at or near the boiling point, d) significant volcano-related deformation, or e) volcano-related earthquake swarm. The last year of "major eruptive event" shown is defined as "one in which juvenile lava erupts as a flow or dome or as an explosive column reaching an altitude of several thousand meters above the vent."
