The 52 volcanoes on this map meet at least one of the following criteria since 1700: a) documented, unquestioned eruption, b) strongly suspected eruption, c) persistent fumaroles at or near the boiling point, d) significant volcano-related deformation, or e) volcano-related earthquake swarm. The last year of "major eruptive event" shown is defined as "one in which juvenile lava erupts as a flow or dome or as an explosive column reaching an altitude of several thousand meters above the vent."
