View of an inflation pit, also known as a lava rise pit, on the Lost Jim lava flow. Inflation pits form where the flow freezes solid, while the supply of molten lava to the surrounding flow is maintained, allowing the surface crust to continually thicken – a process common to pahoehoe lava flows called inflation. inflation pits are therefore places where the flow did not inflate (thicken).
