Location description: Paradox Lake, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Paradox Lake is a small (0.11 km square) meromictic lake with a high catchment-to-lake-area ratio (27) and a nearly closed surface-hydrologic system. It is located in the Kenai Lowland, within 40 km of Tustumena Lake. The oblong-shaped lake contains a single basin on the northeast end of the lake, with a maximum depth of about 16 m. Dense vegetation and steep (typically 10-18 degrees) slopes surround the lake, rising about 6 m on the northwest and southeast sides. Nearly 9-m-long cores were retrieved in 16 m water depth at the deepest part of the lake basin; Livingston corer used. Cores contain 109 tephra layers over 13,200-yr record. Coordinates provided as degrees/minutes/seconds and converted to decimal degrees; datum not specified, assumed to be NAD83.
