Text Description: | SW Snowy volcano. Basal lava flow on basement at 4000-ft point, 3.3 km NNW of Peak 6770. Sample has a whole-rock K-Ar calculated age of 199 +/- 9 ka (Hildreth and others, 2001). Sample in thin section is 15% plagioclase, to 2.5 mm; 5-7% subequal amounts of clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene, to 2 mm; 1% oxides, to 0.3 mm; trace olivine, sieved plagioclase present in a few grains; oxide-pyroxene-plagioclase aggregates are present. |
