Rubbly outcrop of Dome E at Site 9. Fine-grained, hypocrystalline, porphyritic to glomeroporphyritic with a matrix of colorless glass, plagioclase and opaque. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An39 - An55) are up to 2.4 mm and commonly have large melt inclusions, complex zoning and minor resorption along rims; some grains have amphibole and opaque inclusions. Amphibole phenocrysts are up to 1.5 mm with brown-green pleochroism and frequently have opaque or feldspar inclusions; one grain has an orthopyroxene core. Orthopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 1.25 mm and are strongly pleochroic; some have opaque inclusions and a few grains have amphibole rims. Opaque phenocrysts are up to 0.3 mm. 75.4% matrix, 15.5% plagioclase, 1.7% orthopyroxene, 1.6% amphibole, 4.7% vesicles. |
