Text Description: |
Float boulder of silicic material at Site 1 in the Boyden Hills. Fine-grained, vesicular, holocrystalline, porphyritic to glomeroporphyritic with a matrix of cryptocrystalline material, opaque, feldspar and microlites. Cognate inclusions of equigranular masses of plagioclase, opaque, orthopyroxene and biotite are present. There is no melt reaction between the inclusion and the host. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An43 - An53) are up to 2.2 mm and both oscillatory and normal zoning are common. Orthopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 2.75 mm, with intense pleochroism (birefringence at maximum for orthopyroxene) and large opaque inclusions. Dehydrated amphibole is present as opaque aggregates. Opaque phenocrysts up to 1.55 mm (does not appear to be aggregate). Biotite phenocrysts are up to 0.2 mm. |
