Platy to rubbly outcrop on the top of Site 5. Fine grained, hypocrystalline, intersertal, seriate to glomeroporphyritic with a matrix of brown glass, mesostasis, opaque, plagioclase and clinopyroxene. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An40 - An63) are up to 3.1 mm and commonly have sieve textured zones, oscillatory zoning, resorbed rims or resorption embayments. Olivine phenocrysts are up to 1.0 mm. Orthopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 1.0 mm and some have clinopyroxene rims and/or opaque inclusions. Clinopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 0.8 mm. Opaque phenocrysts are up to 0.2 mm. 70.4% matrix, 22.6% plagioclase, 0.6% olivine, 2.1% clinopyroxene, 3.2% orthopyroxene, 0.1% opaque, 1.0% vesicles. |
