Text Description: Scoria from the spatter ridge at Site 4. Fine-grained, vesicular, hypocrystalline, intersertal, porphyritic with a matrix of brown glass, plagioclase, opaque and alteration in vesicles. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An44 - An53) have two populations: most are 0.25-0.05 mm and a few are zoned; less common are grains 0.6-0.4 mm with sieve textured zones. Olivine phenocrysts are up to 0.9 mm and a few have skeletal habits, and some have opaque inclusions and/or overgrowth rims. Clinopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 0.35 mm.
