Platy flow within the spatter ridge at Site 4. Fine-grained, hypocrystalline, intersertal, porphyritic with a matrix of mesostasis, opaque, plagioclase and alteration. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An34 - An58) have two populations: most are 0.25-0.05 mm, euhedral to subhedral; less abundant are 0.65 - 0.35 mm, subhedral to anhedral grains, a few are sieve textured. Olivine phenocryst are up to 2.8 mm and a few have skeletal habits or opaque inclusions; at least one grain has grown around a rounded pyroxene core. One clinopyroxene phenocryst, 0.35 mm, was observed. Opaque phenocrysts are up to 0.1 mm. |
