Approximately 2-4' thick massive zone in an otherwise rubbly and blocky unit from the base of the capping wall-like andesite package at Site 7. Fine grained, holocrystalline, seriate porphyritic with a matrix of mesostasis, alteration, opaque and clinopyroxene. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An30-An58) are up to 1.25 mm and commonly have sieve textured zones, display minor alteration to mica and normal zoning. Olivine phenocrysts are up to 2.0 mm and are mostly altered with only olivine cores preserved. Orthopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 0.55 mm. |
