Alaska Volcano Observatory

Sample from small lava knob. Outcrop composed of columns ~10 cm in diameter. Fine grained andesite with ~40% plagioclase laths (1.2 x 0.2 mm), and <5% pyroxene (0.3 mm) in a hypocrystalline groundmass. Plagioclase laths commonly have swallowtail terminations and do not contain dusty, reacted, or inclusion rich zones.
