Text Description: | This is a 12 cm fine-grained tephra layer in a 60 cm thick coal bed. The tephra layer pinches and swells because of differential compaction of the coal and has sharp contacts with the coal. In some places the tephra is up to 30 cm thick. It splits into two thinner layers of which the lower one is vaguely laminated. NIN1 is from the upper, non-laminated part of this layer. A fossilized tree penetrates the coal seam about 5 m to the east of the sample location. This sample was not suitable for making a thin section. |
