Text Description: A 5-cm thick, dark-brown-orange, clayey, nearly plastic tephra layer that pinches and swells was sampled 18 '' below the top of a 42'' thick coal bed (D-seam). In some places the layer is nearly crumbly. The color also varies laterally to red-brown. The first 18 '' of coal are crushed charcoal fragments. The coal bed is underlain by a 22 cm thick shale then a 5 cm coal, then siltstone. It was not possible to make a thin section from this sample.
