Description: Finch (1931) recorded: "Katmai volcano was observed to be smoking early in July." Coats (1950) also reports Katmai smoking on May 8, 1931. However, Hildreth (1983) states: "Published compilations notwithstanding, there are no credible reports of historic eruptions in the Katmai group except at Novarupta in 1912 and at Trident in 1953 - 1968."
