- "Smoke" [1]
Description: Grewingk (1850, translated 2003 by Fritz Jaensch) writes that Sauer and Sarychev reported Akutan smoking on June 7, 1790 [Julian calendar date]. The English translation of Sarychev states that on June 17, 1791 "At midnight a thick mist arose, which lasted till seven in the morning, when the island Atrutan, with its smoking crater, and the circumjacent islets, gradually opened to view." Sauer states that they saw the island of Akutan on June 18th, 1791 [Gregorian calendar date], and makes no mention of smoke.
