Description: From Miller and others (1998): "Another phreatic eruption, possibly from the west rift, occurred in March, 1957 (Byers, 1959, p. 305, citing article in Anchorage Times of March 12, 1957). Earthquakes were felt throughout southeast Umnak, and residents of Nikolski, the island's main village 24 km southwest of Vsevidof, reportedly observed discharge of steam and volcanic ash. However, in a subsequent article (Anchorage Times, March 15, 1957) a pilot reportedly observed no evidence of a volcanic eruption." The smoke and steam were concurrent with a large earthquake in the vicinity of Adak.
