Text Description:
Approximately 40’ of agglutinated material at Site 8. Sample is from a vesicular block. Fine grained, vesicular, hypocrystalline, intersertal, seriate porphyritic with a matrix of brown glass and plagioclase. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An38 - An61) are up to 1.63 mm and often have normal zoning, and occasionally have oscillatory zoning, sieve textured zones, and/or resorption embayments. Olivine phenocrysts are up to 0.8 mm with alteration along the rim and brown melt inclusions. Orthopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 0.55 mm, one grain has a clinopyroxene rim. Clinopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 0.15 mm. 56.8% matrix, 20.5% plagioclase, 1.1% olivine, 0.3% clinopyroxene, 0.7% orthopyroxene, 20.6% vesicles.
