Text Description:
Pale white tephra that occurs approximately 41 cm below the surface and has a continuous horizontal exposure across the outcrop. Tephra S8514A and one unsampled, very thin, pale-white tephra overly this tephra, which is 2 cm thick. Loess occurs above this tephra, and a 1-cm-thick peat directly underlies it. This peat was radiocarbon dated at 3390+/-180 yBP. Another thin (<0.5 cm), unsampled, pale-white tephra occurs approximately 11 cm below this tephra.

R.< 3390 ± 180 14C; 8881; Radiocarbon date on peat (S8514BP) that is ~43 cm below surface and directly underlying this tephra, providing a maximum limiting age. -1800--Small gravel pit on the north side of the Glenn Highway, Alasksa, approximately 6 km east of the Chickaloon River crossing. Half-meter thick exposure of loess interbedded with layers of tephra and peat that mantles crumbling black shale of the Matanuska Formation. Four tephra recorded in the stratigraphy of this location, two of which were sampled and analyzed. See Fontana (1988) for detailed stratigraphy. Coordinates provided as degrees/minutes and converted to decimal degrees; datum not provided, assumed to be NAD83.
