Caption:On the right, a COSMO SkyMed Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite image from 8 February showing that the vent location at Bogoslof is still underwater. A Sentinel-2 visible image from 2 February is shown on the left for reference. Features not to scale in the vertical dimension. Subsurface features inferred from observations at Bogoslof and other shallow submarine volcanoes and their eruptions. The exsolution of magmatic volatiles and magma-water-wet sediment interaction probably initiates some amount of convection and density driven circulation (shown by orange arrows) within the vent-filling debris.

Caption:Changes in the configuration of Bogoslof Island resulting from the ongoing 2016-17 eruption. The January 30-31, 2017 eruptive activity generated roughly 0.4 square kilometers of new land and as of January 31, 2017, the island area was 1.02 square kilometers, roughly three times the size of the pre-eruption island. Nearly all of this new material consists of unconsolidated pyroclastic fall and flow (surge) deposits that are highly susceptible to wave erosion and thus additional changes in the configuration of the island are likely.

Caption:Satellite image of Bogoslof volcano acquired on February 2, 2017. Note that the vent for the explosive eruptions was underwater once again at this time, compared to a previous image from January 31, 2017 that showed a deep crater. This is likely due to the inflow of ocean water through the porous ash fall deposits as the bottom of the crater on January 31 was below sea level. This image was acquired prior to several modest explosive events on February 3, 2017, which may have resulted in additional crater and island landform changes.

The soundtrack was derived from the infrasound datastream by mapping the normally subaudible infrasound signal into the range of human hearing. In this track, you can hear explosions at the beginning of the eruption, transitioning to sustained jetting. Data recorded at an infrasound array on Umnak Island from 05:30 UTC - 12:30 UTC. Caption:Satellite image of Bogoslof volcano collected on 31 January 2017 showing the significant changes at Bogoslof Island following the eruption during the night of 30 to 31 January. Freshly erupted volcanic rock and ash have formed a barrier that separates the vent from the sea. This is the first time this has been observed since the eruptive sequence began in mid-December 2016. The vent is below sea level, and erosion of the ash deposits by wave or eruptive processes would allow sea water to flow into the vent again.
