CLEVELAND VOLCANO (VNUM #311240)

Low-level unrest continues. The Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level were reduced to Yellow/Advisory earlier today, reflecting a pause in eruptive activity. Over the past day elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite data during periods of clear weather and are interpreted to be due to hot degassing from vents in the the summit crater. Web camera observations were obscured by clouds. No significant activity was detected in seismic or pressure sensor (infrasound) data over the past day.

Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

Low-level unrest continues at Great Sitkin Volcano. Nothing significant was observed in partly cloudy satellite images over the past day. Brief periods of elevated seismic were detected over the past day, indicating that the volcano remains in a heightened state of unrest.

Great Sitkin Volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be accomplished using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.
