AVO VOLCANO ACTIVITY NOTIFICATION

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Tuesday, February 25, 2014, 1:57 PM AKST (Tuesday, February 25, 2014, 22:57 UTC)

SHISHALDIN VOLCANO (VNUM #311360)
54°45'19" N 163°58'16" W, Summit Elevation 9373 ft (2857 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

No activity observed in partly cloudy satellite images over the past day. Data from the one working seismic station at the volcano does not show any unusual seismicity. Webcam views obscured by clouds during the last 24 hours.

CLEVELAND VOLCANO (VNUM #311240)
52°49'20" N 169°56'42" W, Summit Elevation 5676 ft (1730 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Infrasound and lightning alarms detected two small explosions at Cleveland Volcano at ~4:17 UTC February 25 (19:17 AKST February 24) and 10:35 UTC (1:35 AKST) February 25. Satellite data available several hours after these events occurred confirm that small ash clouds were generated by the explosions. The events were brief, and the estimated altitude of the drifting ash clouds was about 5 km (16,000 ft) asl.

These explosions are typical of eruptive activity of Cleveland over the past few years. There may be a heightened chance of additional ash emissions in the coming weeks. Because these explosions were brief and there is no sign of ongoing eruption, Cleveland remains at Volcano Alert Level/Aviation Color Code YELLOW/ADVISORY.

VENIAMINOF VOLCANO (VNUM #312070)
56°11'52" N 159°23'35" W, Summit Elevation 8225 ft (2507 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Seismicity at Veniaminof remains slightly above background. No unusual activity seen in cloudy satellite or webcam images over the past day.
