ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Wednesday, October 2, 2013, 10:36 AM AKDT (Wednesday, October 2, 2013, 18:36 UTC)
VENIAMINOF VOLCANO
(VNUM #312070)
56°11'52" N 159°23'35" W,
Summit Elevation 8225 ft (2507 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code:
YELLOW
Low-level seismicity continued at Veniaminof during the past day. Satellite and web camera images have been mostly obscured by clouds. AVO has received no other reports of activity at the volcano.
CLEVELAND VOLCANO
(VNUM #311240)
52°49'20" N 169°56'42" W,
Summit Elevation 5676 ft (1730 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code:
YELLOW
A small, short duration explosive event was detected by distant AVO infrasound (pressure) sensors, with an onset time of 1224 UTC (0424 AKDT). The infrasound signal from this explosion was of similar magnitude to those detected at Cleveland over the past several years, but the first detected event since May, 2013. Satellite images show no evidence of an ash cloud, which is typical for events of this size. This explosion does not necessarily indicate that Cleveland has entered a new phase of increased activity. There are no seismic instruments installed on Cleveland, so AVO will continue to monitor the volcano with satellite and distant geophysical sensors.
