AVO VOLCANO ACTIVITY NOTIFICATION

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Monday, August 28, 2017, 4:38 AM AKDT (Monday, August 28, 2017, 12:38 UTC)

BOGOSLOF VOLCANO (VNUM #311300)
53°55'38" N 168°2'4" W, Summit Elevation 492 ft (150 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Following the explosive eruption that occurred this morning at 11:23 UTC (03:23 AKDT) August 28 and lasted about 25 minutes, satellite imagery shows only a very small eruption cloud drifting east-southeast. This cloud dissipated quickly and is no longer detectable above the meteorological cloud deck (8000 ft). Since this event, seismicity and infrasound as detected on neighboring islands has been quiet and no lightning has been detected.

The National Weather Service Alaska Aviation Weather Unit did not issue a SIGMET for this eruption. Status of the ash cloud forecast can be found at the AAWU website at http://aawu.arh.noaa.gov/.

Bogoslof volcano remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition. Additional explosions producing high-altitude volcanic clouds could occur at any time. Low-level explosive activity that is below our ability to detect in our data sources may be occurring. These low-level explosions could pose a hazard in the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

The National Weather Service Alaska Aviation Weather Unit issued a SIGMET for this eruption. Status of the ash cloud forecast can be found at the AAWU website at http://aawu.arh.noaa.gov/
