ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT

Two episodes of seismic tremor were detected from Bogoslof Volcano this morning at 13:57 and 14:33 UTC (4:57 and 5:33, February 3 AKST). The first tremor burst lasted about 9 minutes. The second burst lasted about 20 minutes and was also observed on infrasound instruments, indicating that an explosion occurred. Such tremor bursts are consistent with volcanic emissions however no ash cloud was seen rising above the low meteorological cloud deck in satellite data. No lightning strikes typically associated with the larger explosive events have been detected. At this time, there has been no further significant eruptive activity detected in seismic data .

Bogoslof volcano remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition. Additional explosions producing high-altitude volcanic clouds could occur at any time. Low-level explosive activity that is below our ability to detect in our data sources may be occurring. These low-level explosions could pose a hazard in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. When such low-level activity occurs, it is considered to be consistent with Aviation Color Code ORANGE and Volcano Alert Level WATCH.
