AVO VOLCANO ACTIVITY NOTIFICATION

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Tuesday, January 17, 2017, 7:33 AM AKST (Tuesday, January 17, 2017, 16:33 UTC)

BOGOSLOF VOLCANO (VNUM #311300)
53°55'38" N 168°2'4" W, Summit Elevation 492 ft (150 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

AVO detected a gradual increase in seismic activity at Bogoslof volcano this morning beginning about 4:22 AKST (13:22 Jan 17 UTC) and continuing as a series of discrete events until about 5:48 AKST (14:48 UTC) when a steadily increasing tremor signal was detected. The tremor persisted for about 30 minutes until approximately 6:21 AKST (15:21 UTC) and since then the seismicity has declined and remains at low levels. During this period of unrest no volcanic clouds were apparent in satellite data and no lightning strikes were detected.

The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Alert Level remains at WATCH.

AVO has no ground-based volcano monitoring equipment on Bogoslof volcano. We continue to monitor satellite images, data from distant seismic and infrasound instruments, and information from the Worldwide Lightning Location Network for indications of significant activity.

OTHER ALASKA VOLCANOES

Other Alaska volcanoes show no signs of significant unrest: http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/

AVO scientists conduct daily checks of earthquake activity at all seismically-monitored volcanoes, examine web camera and satellite images for evidence of airborne ash and elevated surface temperatures, and consult other monitoring data as needed.
