AVO has detected two short-lived, seismically energetic eruptions from Bogoslof volcano today at 11:23 AKST (20:23 UTC) and at 12:30 AKST (21:30 UTC). The estimated duration for each of the these events is 5 to 6 minutes based on seismicity. Both events were observed by pilots. The estimated height of the cloud from the first eruption was 18,000 feet asl. The estimated height of the cloud from the second eruption was 14,500 feet asl. The first event was not seen in satellite data but a small cloud was observed following the second event which confirmed an altitude of about 14,500 feet asl. Due to the short duration of these eruptions and the relatively low altitude of the resultant eruption clouds, the Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Alert Level remains at WATCH
Additional explosive events at Bogoslof may occur without warning. Due to the unpredictability of the situation, the Aviation Color Code remains RED and the Volcano Alert Level WARNING.
AVO has no ground-based volcano monitoring equipment on Bogoslof volcano. We continue to monitor satellite images, data from distant seismic and infrasound instruments, and information from the Worldwide Lightning Location Network for indications of significant activity.
