AVO VOLCANO ACTIVITY NOTIFICATION

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Saturday, September 3, 2011, 11:48 AM AKDT (Saturday, September 3, 2011, 19:48 UTC)

CLEVELAND VOLCANO (VNUM #311240)
52°49'20" N 169°56'42" W, Summit Elevation 5676 ft (1730 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

A thermal anomaly was observed through mostly cloudy skies at the summit of Mt. Cleveland this morning. This could indicate that magma has reached or is near the surface of the lava dome in the crater and it is possible that dome growth may have resumed. Additional less cloudy views of the summit will be needed to verify the status of the lava dome and to determine if dome growth is occurring. AVO has received no other information about unrest at the volcano.

Without a real-time seismic network on the volcano, AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest, provide forecasts of eruptive activity, or confirmation of explosive, ash-producing events. AVO will continue to monitor the volcano using satellite data as it becomes available.
