Low-level steam and ash emissions continue at Kanaga Volcano
in the Aleutian Islands. Weather clouds prevented ground observers from viewing the summit and upper flanks, but on several occasions a vigorous steam plume was observed rising through scattered clouds above the volcano. This week we received aerial photographs of the summit area taken by Adak Navy personnel in late January. These show that the vent system extends beyond the summit onto the upper western flank, corroborating reports by ground observers during the last several months.
Residents in Perryville reported that inclement weather prevented observation of any eruptive activity at Veniaminof this week.
COOK INLET VOLCANOES
Seismicity at Spurr, Augustine, Redoubt and Iliamna
volcanoes remains at normal levels.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory continues to seismically
monitor Spurr, Augustine, Redoubt and Iliamna volcanoes. We
maintain a computerized alarm system that is capable of
notifying AVO seismologists during non business hours should
unusual seismic activity occur.
