The mol % anorthite essentially tracks the amount of calcium oxide in the crystal. Higher calcium concentrations reflect more water in a magma that probably also has lower silicon (like basalt or basaltic andesite). The lower calcium plagioclase usually crystallizes in magma that has more silicon (dacite and rhyolite), and also possibly less water. This crystal is compositionally zoned, with lower calcium concentrations towards the rim, and a highly calcic core. The core (~An80-85) has a coarsely sieved texture, meaning that it contains glass pockets inside. Amphibole is a volcanic mineral that crystallizes in magma that contains some amount of water. As magma moves up toward the surface, it loses water and the amphibole reacts, forming a rim containing plagioclase, pyroxene, and oxide minerals. At Mt Redoubt, this process probably happens when the magma reached depths of about 4 km or less. This particular amphibole has a rim that is very well developed, which could indicate it was in a batch of magma that resided beneath Redoubt at somewhat shallow depths for a while. More work will help us figure out timescales and magma depths. Outflow was also noted from the east margin in November, 2007. AVO sampled water at that time and we are waiting for analyses.
