TerraSAR-X satellite radar image from October 1, 2011 showing the Islands of the Four Mountains in the central Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Cleveland Volcano on the west side of Chuginadak Island was erupting at the time of this image acquisition, producing a lava dome in the summit crater. Satellite radar images such as this one can observe the ground through cloud cover. Historically active volcanoes Carlisle and Kagamil are also seen in this image. Herbert has no known historical activity. The patterns in the water around the islands are due to waves and ocean swells. Note that radar images have topographic distortion due to the viewing angle of satellite.
