AVO Image

Animation of satellite radar images from the TerraSAR-X sensor of the summit of Cleveland Volcano showing the summit crater and growth of the lava dome between August 7 and October 1, 2011. The summit crater is about 200 meters across. Note that satellite radar images have some inherent topographic distortion due to the manner in which they are collected. This gives the appearance that the dome has reached the top of the crater rim on the east side. Other observations indicate that the dome is still tens of meters below the rim as of October 1.
