Mount Spurr volcano, 3,374 m (11,070 ft) high, is
visible on the skyline 125 km (78 mi) west of Anchorage,
Alaska. In 1992, three explosive eruptions from the Crater
Peak vent of Mount Spurr blanketed south-central Alaska
with several millimeters ( 1/16 - 1/8 inch) of ash and
forced the closure of Anchorage International Airport for
20 hours. Photograph by R. McGimsey, U.S. Geological
Survey, October 1, 1988.
