Alaska Volcano Observatory

The summit crater of Redoubt Volcano over a period from 1990 to 2007. The final dome of the 1989-90 eruption was emplaced in late April 1990 and snow/ice began accumulating soon thereafter. Over the next 9-10 years, the crater gradually begins to refill and the 1990 dome becomes nearly completely covered by 1999. By early 2006, even a persistent ice hole over the 1990 dome is covered. Later in 2006 and throughout 2007 two small ice holes—one over the 1990 dome and the other over the dome remnant from the the 1965-68 eruption—mark areas of warm rock. Steam is observed wafting from the hole over the 1990 in February, 2007.
