Caption:AVO geologist Game McGimsey setting an anchor system to rappel down to the warm, acidic lake within Crater Peak vent of Mount Spurr. The object was to collect water samples, measure temperature and pH, and make observations of the numerous upwellings. The first of 3 eruptions occurred on June 27, 1992.

Caption:Seismometers such as this one installed near Mount Spurr volcano (on skyline in background) provide the Alaska Volcano Observatory with a continuous, radio-telemetered record of volcanic earthquakes. These data are used to monitor the state of activity at the volcano and are critical to the ability of the Observatory to issue timely warnings of eruptions. View is to the north. Photograph by C. Neal , U.S. Geological Survey, June 3, 1993.

Caption:Geologist Game McGimsey collects ashfall from the crevassed surface of a glacier draining Spurr Volcano. He is collecting coarse ash and lapilli from a known area (e.g. 10 x 10 cm). The sample is bagged, dried, and weighed; results are used in conjunction with measurements at many other points along the fallout path to compute an accurate eruption volume measurement.

Caption:A correlation spectrometer (COSPEC) is used to measure the flux of sulfur dioxide gas emanating from volcanoes in Alaska. The device is mounted on an aircraft which flies under the volcanic plume and measures the absorption of ultraviolet light by sulfur dioxide molecules. Using the windspeed and geometry of the plume, a daily flux can be calculated.
