NEW LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: GREEN
PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN: YELLOW
The daily number of recorded earthquakes at Akutan Volcano continues to be low, with some fluctuations. The current rate is significantly lower than the rate measured during the seismic crisis of mid-March. Background seismicity has yet to stabilize for this volcano, but the small number of earthquakes per day is acceptable for downgrading to Level of Concern Color Code GREEN at this time. AVO will issue a new information release upon any significant change in the level of seismicity.
Data from five seismic stations near Akutan are transmitted in real-time to AVO. AVO continues to closely moniter the volcano using automated computer analysis, an alarm system, and frequent examination of seismic records.
COOK INLET VOLCANOES
Seismic activity at Spurr, Redoubt, Iliamna, and Augustine
volcanoes remains at normal background levels. We
maintain a computerized alarm system capable of notifying
AVO seismologists during non-business hours should unusual
seismic activity occur.
