LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: YELLOW
The rate of seismicity at Akutan Volcano continues to be fewer than 5 recorded earthquakes per day, a significant decrease from the number of earthquakes recorded during the seismic crisis of mid-March. Should earthquake activity continue to decline or remain at this low level over the next week, AVO will downgrade our Level of Concern Color Code to GREEN next Friday.
Data from five seismic stations near Akutan are transmitted in real-time to AVO. AVO ceased around-the-clock staffing last Friday based on the continuing decrease in the number of recorded earthquakes at Akutan. However, AVO continues to closely monitor the volcano using automated computer analysis, and alarm system, and frequent examination of seismic records.
COOK INLET VOLCANOES
Seismic activity at Spurr, Redoubt, Iliamna, and Augustine
volcanoes remains at normal background levels. We
maintain a computerized alarm system capable of notifying
AVO seismologists during non-business hours should unusual
seismic activity occur.
