Poor weather obscured Kanaga during most of the past week.
Naval weather observers in Adak reported seeing steam and
ash rising a few thousand feet above the volcano on Tuesday.
Adak residents also reported a very strong sulphur smell during the week.
No pilot reports of continuing eruptive activity at Kanaga were logged
by FAA and NWS.
Residents of Port Heiden were able to see Veniaminof Volcano on several
days this past week. No steam or ash over the volcano was noted.
COOK INLET VOLCANOES
Seismicity at Spurr, Augustine, Redoubt and Iliamna volcanoes remains
at normal levels. AVO received several call this week regarding a
large steam plume from Iliamna. Steam emission from the vigorous summit
fumaroles at Iliamna is common and we have no reason to suspect that this
week's plume is unusual.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory continues to seismically monitor Spurr,
Augustine, Redoubt and Iliamna volcanoes. We maintain a computerized
alarm system that is capable of notifying AVO seismologists during non
business hours should unusual seismic activity occur.
