The level of earthquake activity at Augustine Volcano has declined over the past 30 hours since the last explosive event at 00:16 AST (0916 UTC), January 14, 2006. AVO is therefore downgrading the color code at Augustine Volcano from RED to ORANGE.
The level of seismic activity at the volcano remains above background. It is likely, but not certain, that further explosive activity will occur. Explosive events similar to those of January 13 and 14 could occur with little or no warning. AVO will continue 24/7 staffing and will be monitoring activity closely.
In addition to the ash clouds produced by the recent explosive events, small volume pyroclastic flows and volcanic mudflows occurred, and at least one pyroclastic flow was captured by the web camera on Augustine Island. It is possible that these flows reached the coastline. Recent cloudy conditions have prevented overflights to the volcano, but a flight will go out during the first break in weather, possibly today.
