Weekly Report about the state of the volcanoes of the Kurile Islands

November 16, 23:30 UTC, 09:30 Sakhalin Time (SKT), 2009.

Time (days, hours) is given by Greenwich .

VOLCANOES OF THE NORTHERN KURILE ISLANDS
Nemo Peak (Onekotan Is.), Krenitsyn ( Onekotan Is.), Severgin (Harimkotan Is.), Sinarka (Shiashkotan Is.), Kuntomintar (Shiashkotan Is.), Ekarma (Ekarma Is.), Chirinkotan (Chirinkotan Is.) – GREEN

VOLCANOES OF THE CENTRAL KURILE ISLANDS
Raikoke (Raikoke Is.), Sarychev Peak (Matua Is.), Rasshua (Rasshua Is.), Ushishir (Yankich Is.), Pallas Peak ( Ketoi Is.), Prevo Peak (Simushur Is.), Zavaritsky (Simushur Is.), Goryashchaya Sopka (Simushir Is.)- GREEN

VOLCANOES OF SOUTHERN KURILE ISLANDS
Chyorny (Chirpoi Is.), Snow (Chirpoi Is.), Kolokol Group (Urup Is.), Kudryavy (Iturup Is.), Menshy Brat: (Iturup Is.), Chirip - Bogdan Khmelnitsky Group (Iturup Is.), Baransky (Iturup Is.), Ivan Grozny (Iturup Is.), Stokap (Iturup Is.), Atsonupuri (Iturup Is.), Berutarube (Iturup Is.), Ruruy (Kunashir Is.), Tyatya (Kunashir Is.), Mendeleev (Kunashir Is.), Golovnin (Kunashir Is.) – GREEN

Analysis of satellite data once daily (TERRA MODIS, NOAA, MTSAT, GEOS -9) is our primary tool for monitoring of all volcanoes of the Kurile Islands .

Visual observations are used for the volcanoes of Kunashir and Iturup Islands .

Surface instrumental observations are absent; there are no seismic networks on any of these Kurile volcanoes and our ability to detect the onset of volcanic unrest is limited

SVERT will issue these notices weekly unless volcanic activity increases. The report is published on SVERT and AVO web sites:

Volcanoes of the Paramushir ( Ebeko, Chikurachki, Tatarinov Group, Fuss, Karpinsky Group) and Atlasov (Alaid) Islands are monitored by Kamchatka Group KVERT.

Volcano Alert Levels
NORMAL
Volcano is in typical background, noneruptive state or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has ceased and volcano has returned to noneruptive background state.
ADVISORY
Volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has decreased significantly but continues to be closely monitored for possible renewed increase.
WATCH
Volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, OR eruption is underway but poses limited hazards.
WARNING
Hazardous eruption is imminent, underway, or suspected.
UNASSIGNED
Aviation Color Codes
GREEN
Volcano is in typical background, noneruptive state or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has ceased and volcano has returned to noneruptive background state.
YELLOW
Volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has decreased significantly but continues to be closely monitored for possible renewed increase.
ORANGE
Volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, OR eruption is underway with no or minor volcanic-ash emissions [ash-plume height specified, if possible].
RED
Eruption is imminent with significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere likely OR eruption is underway or suspected with significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere [ash-plume height specified, if possible].
